Privacy on demand: glass that turns opaque when you need it
You’re looking for a surface no one can see through from the outside. The most flexible answer isn’t a permanent treatment applied once and for all — it’s glass, or a film on existing glass, that switches from clear to opaque whenever you choose. Privacy becomes a state you turn on and off, not a fixed condition.
Privacy as a state, not a fixed treatment
The surface changes: from clear it turns opaque, and back again when you want it. In its opaque state it isn’t a light veil — it scatters light, so brightness still comes through but the sharp image behind it doesn’t. This holds in both directions: when it’s active, you can’t make out what’s inside or outside. It’s privacy you decide moment by moment, not frosted glass that stays the same forever.
The deciding factor: which state is the resting one
Two technologies solve the same thing from opposite ends. PDLC is opaque at rest: with no power it stays private, and clears only when the electric input arrives — privacy is the default, and it holds even with the power off. PNLC works the other way: clear at rest, opaque when you send the input. The real question isn’t "which is better", but "what do I want when the system is off".
Which technology for privacy
If you want the resting state to already be private — a meeting room, a clinic, a glazed bathroom — PDLC is the natural choice: it starts opaque, and you clear it only when needed. If the space should stay transparent most of the time and turn private only at chosen moments, PNLC’s reverse logic fits better. One clarification that avoids a common mix-up: neither is the "one-way" glass you can see out of without being seen — that’s a different family, mirror film. Switchable glass, when opaque, blocks the view from both sides; when clear, it’s ordinary glass.
From one surface to many
