Electric blinds or switchable glass: two ways to govern light and privacy
Anyone shopping for electric blinds wants to command light and sightlines without leaving the desk: a motor instead of a cord. It’s a proven answer — but no longer the only one. Switchable glass reaches the same goal by a different route: instead of screening the surface, it changes the state of the surface itself.
What an electric blind does — and where it stops
A motorised blind tilts its slats and lifts on command, even on glazing that’s hard to reach. The trade-off is mechanical: motors, cables and slats are moving parts that gather dust and, over the years, call for maintenance. Integral blinds sealed inside the double glazing solve the dust, but tie the mechanism to the life of the unit: if the motor stops, the intervention involves the whole glazed panel.
Glass that changes state, with no moving parts
Switchable glass takes a different route: no slats in front of the pane — the surface itself turns from clear to opaque on command. A film applied to existing glass — or an active glass unit, for new builds — switches in an instant, silently, with no mechanics to wear out. The glazing stays clean to the eye, nothing protrudes, and a retrofit doesn’t require replacing the frame. An alternative configuration is also available: the Venetian effect — horizontal bands on the same film, the venetian look from the switching surface itself, with no slats and no motors.
Privacy: closed slats or an opaque surface
A blind protects by closing its slats: it blocks the view, but takes most of the daylight with it. Switchable glass separates the two: in its opaque state the surface diffuses light — brightness keeps coming through, the image of what’s behind does not. For a meeting room, a practice or a glazed bathroom, that’s the difference between darkening the room and making it private while keeping it bright.
Controlling light and heat
Tilting the slats grades the light: it’s the blind’s strong suit — but not an exclusive one. With the right control electronics, all our films also work as dimmers, like the lights at home: you pick a level, not just on or off. What gets dosed differs: SPD acts on colour, from full clarity to a deep tint, and is built to follow the sun through the day; PDLC and PNLC dose how much light the surface blocks through its degree of opacity. Where solar load and heat need cutting on large glazed façades, Blackout Hyper Glass pairs a deep dark tint at rest with a switch to smoked clarity on command: solar control that eases the load on cooling in summer.
When the blind is still the right choice
If the goal is darkness — a bedroom, a screening room — the closed slat or a dedicated blackout system remains the most direct answer: switchable glass governs light and privacy, it is not a total blackout system. If the goal is privacy, solar control and glazing that stays clean with no mechanics, the comparison shifts in favour of the active surface.
